“Every city has an arbitrary urban image, which is formed by an official reputation and an individual
character and image.” – Kevin Lynch.
Würzburg’s urban image is analyzed in reference to Kevin Lynch’s „Das Stadtbild und seine Elemente“. The analysis is limited to physical objects only, the outer appearance without making any link to historical events or social impact. Lynch abstracts five elements making an urban image: Ways, borderlines, areas, focuses, marks and landmarks. These days digital data is used massively and has already displaced classical city maps. Classical photography is compared with digitally emulated models in order to illustrate the spirit of age.
